As in any essay, you will start with an introduction (about 200 words) where you briefly
describe the American Revolution (two or three sentences), state the purpose of your work, your
thesis, what are you doing, what sources are you using, and how are you doing it.
You need to place the American Revolution in an international historical context (about
200-250 words), analyze the events, and provide an argument to your thesis (500-750 words) and
finalize the essay with a conclusion where you summarize your findings (about 100-150 words).
For this essay, you will use Wim Klooster’s chapter, (you can use all the book as well),
Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, the Constitution, Richard Price’s excerpt, and the lectures (for
additional context). You can also use Manning’s chapter from the first week for making
Familiarize yourself with the Chicago Manual of Style for footnotes (no endnotes, no intext citations!!!) and include a Bibliography (not Works Cited!!!) at the end of the essay.
Your final essay will be double-spaced and be of about 1200 words. Use Times New
Roman, 12pt, or Arial, 11pt. font for writing it. Upload a .docx file on UMLearn before the
deadline. The file must be in this format: YOUR_LAST_NAME_HIST1380_Essay1.docx (don’t
use another file format).
As the lectures are not standard citations, I provide the formats for the Chicago style.
