Topic 4 DQ 2
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), and the Joint Commission (JC) require that health care organizations maintain risk management programs to address infection control. Detail three measures that your health care organization (or any health care organization) could implement, beyond what is currently in practice, to support the delivery of safe health care services and avoid the spread of infection (e.g., placing hand washing devices at all of the public entrances of the health care facility). Support your response with a minimum of two peer-reviewed references.
Topic 4 DQ 2
With infection control being so important in the healthcare setting, especially at this time during the pandemic, there are many different measures that could be implemented within an organization to avoid the spread of infection. On an inpatient behavioral health unit, hand sanitizer is not allowed to be as easily accessible and available as it is throughout the medical floors due to the possibility of patients consuming the product. This makes it more challenging for staff to be compliant with hand hygiene policies and with hand washing being the single most effective way to minimize the spread of infections, there needs to be a better way (Mehta et al., 2014). The current standard is to carry hand sanitizer in pockets and to use at times as the policy states, however reaching in pockets with dirty hands, taking the cap off, using the sanitizer and putting it back seems unsanitary. A wearable, automatic sanitizing belt, could be implemented as touchless dispensers that are strategically located can effectively stop the spread of infection and can be safely kept away from the patients (Das et al., 2021).
On the behavioral health there are 2 patients to a room and within the room is a shared restroom. Another measure that could be implemented, although quite costly, would be to provide single rooms for the patients. According to one study, providing patients with single rooms led to a decrease in the spread of specific infections (Rosenberg & Todd, 2019).
It is against the Michigan Mental Health Code to force a patient to stay in their room (isolate) on an inpatient psychiatric unit due to the rooms not having televisions and could be looked at as seclusion. When a patient somehow makes it to the unit and ends up having lice, scabies, pneumonia, Cdiff, etc., legally they can not be made to stay in their rooms while they await to transfer to the main hospital. While isolation can prevent the spread of infection, it would be useful to have a designated room on the unit that could be used for isolation purposes that is legal and keeps the other patients safe.
